McGee Park Master Plan
San Juan County is excited to start creating a master plan for the development of McGee Park. The site is home to the San Juan County Fairgrounds, the Sunray Park and Casino, and the RV Park. The park has great potential to include additional amenities that provide new recreational opportunities for area residents, RV visitors, and the Four Corners region.
The master plan consists of five primary areas of development. The East Park Space is located in the area west of the fire station and sheriff’s office along County Road 5500. The Central Gathering Space is the currently a small park area that has the large antique grader. The South Gathering Space is located adjacent to the south RV parking lot. The Pond Gathering Space is around the existing drainage pond in the southwest corner of the park. And, the Racetrack Infield is the open space that is surrounded by the race track.
The various concepts for these spaces include different configurations and combinations of a variety of amenities. We would like your thoughts and feedback on the different proposed uses and alignments. Are there things that you feel should be included in the plan or are there things that should be omitted from the designs?
East Park Space
The design of the East Park Space is intended to provide recreational opportunities for families. The site currently has a small grass field, a paved basketball court, and a paved tennis court. The concept plans include options for grass fields, children’s play equipment, basketball courts, futsal courts, shaded group gathering areas, pickleball courts, and a BMX pump track. Another optional feature is a pedestrian bridge across the arroyo.
Central Gathering Space
The design of the Central Gathering Space is intended to provide residents and visitors a place to get together in small groups, a small dog relief park, a small grassy area, and possibly a miniature golf course.
South Gathering Space
The design of the South Gathering Space is intended to provide amenities primarily for RV guests. The proposed options include small group shade structures, large group shade structures, small group fire pits, walking paths, cornhole courts, horseshoe pits, bocce courts, a multi-use court, a small dog relief area, pickleball courts, and possibly a small movie screen.
Pond Gathering Space
The design of the Pond Gathering Space takes advantage of a more serene, natural space. The concepts include a columbarium that provides a respectable final resting place for indigent residents of the County who have passed away. This space also includes walking paths and small gathering spaces around the pond.
Racetrack Infield
The concepts for the development of the infield of the racetrack create various opportunities for large events. The designs present options for a large artificial turf area that could be used for sports and balloon rallies. The space is also being considered for outdoor markets, a performance stage, and open space for events like motocross races, monster truck shows, and rodeos. The various options show locations to access the infield through a tunnel under the track, or at-grade crossing points. Other recreation concepts include a high-ropes courts, mini golf course, go kart track, and other smaller event spaces.
